the need

The need for effective weight loss programs that truly promote meaningful health outcomes (improvement in endocrine, cardiovascular and orthopedic parameters) is not diminishing. According to a recent article in the Journal of the American Medical Association:

It is well-known that overweight and obesity are risk factors for a variety of chronic conditions including diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, stroke, heart disease, certain cancers, and arthritis. Higher grades of obesity are associated with excess mortality, primarily from cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and certain cancers. Trends in obesity-related health outcomes do not always parallel trends in the prevalence of obesity. Despite the increases in obesity prevalence, mortality rates and mortality from coronary heart disease and stroke have declined over several decades, possibly due to improvements in public health and medical care and in other cardiovascular risk factors; however, hypertension appears to be increasing. Of these obesity-related conditions, diabetes may be most closely linked to obesity, and the increasing incidence of diabetes worldwide is of considerable concern. In the United States, the prevalence of diagnosed diabetes increased significantly from 1988-1994 through 2005-2006.” – JAMA. 2010;303(3):235-241.1

As a health care provider, you want to be confident when referring your patients for assistance with lifestyle change to achieve weight loss. According to the National Weight Control Registry (http://www.nwcr.ws/), 55% of participants report having utilized some sort of structured weight loss program to personally achieve lasting weight loss. Unfortunately, commercial weight loss programs and health are not always synonymous.

At the new well; they are.

the problem

It’s no secret that some commercial weight loss programs do not promote health and well-being and often promote unproven, un-sustainable, strange and faddish behaviors.

The United States is the epicenter of an obesity epidemic. Fad diets generally ignore or refute what is known about fundamental associations between dietary pattern and human health.” – Pandemic obesity and the contagion of nutritional nonsense 2

Effective weight loss methods that simultaneously promote reduction in blood glucose, serum insulin levels, triglycerides and blood pressure are well documented. 3

Health and wellness has long been defined as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.4
